I’m an enthusiast when it comes to Identity Security, I enjoy all aspects of it, including the various tools used to manage it.
Though I’m a Ping Identity admin in my current position, I’m always looking to learn and become familiar with as many different tools as I can in the space. I enjoy seeing how each vendor approaches IAM, plus I always enjoy gaining new skills.
Getting Okta certified has been on my list for a while (Yes, I have an Excel spreadsheet with various certifications and products I want to tackle), but their recent discount made me want to try it now.
I had setup an Okta dev org a while back, just to learn it, but this gave me a chance to go through a structured approach of trying different tasks to see what I knew.
To prepare I used their study guide, their free basics course, their practice tests, and of course my dev environment. I will say, the fact that I deal with Ping products on a daily basis also helped. As with anything in IT, if you learn one product it is much easier to get familiar with other similar products.
Overall I really enjoyed the prep for this, as well as the exam itself. Their format is what others need to take note of. They use DOMC questions, so you don’t get all the multiple choice answers at once. You have to respond to each answer with a yes or no in relation to the question.
Having to know what is right AND wrong is something I really enjoyed. Also, the fact that you have a lab portion where you have to actually configure Okta based on the various use cases they provide is what takes it over the top.
As a tech head, being able to prove what you know on a test by actually doing something is the best experience in certification….in my opinion of course.
Anyway, hopefully this helps those interested in Okta, please see the resources below:
