The Background:
I spent quite a few years as an IT guy. A network engineer to be specific. From around 2005 to 2012, I worked for the local government.
I was able to get my hands dirty in quite a few areas. End-user support, server administration, security, wireless, Active Directory, and management of the entire network, were all a part of my duties at some point.
I enjoyed it, got a few certifications, (with many more planned)….then I left.
Our kids were younger, and I was tired of getting home when they were going to bed. I wanted the flexibility to be at their school events whenever they had them, home when they got out, and the overall freedom to be there for my family.
In my spare time, early mornings and late nights, I built a business up to the point where I felt comfortable leaving my position as a network engineer. Being self employed has been great! It’s not for everyone, but it is definitely something I identify with.
The Change-Up:
However, the kids are older now, our last of 3 graduates next year. We’re looking towards the next phase. I love being an entrepreneur, but I also wanted supplement the business with another stream of income.
My wife and I discussed & prayed about it, and figured if I was going to do this, I may as well do something I was good at, something that would keep me interested (very important!). Though I hadn’t been involved in “corporate” IT for the last 8 years. I was still working with technology during that time, just in my own business.
I’ve been supporting end-users, handling identity/account access management, managing and securing servers, securing websites, e-commerce and e-learning systems, application support, managing cloud resources, and customer/user training. Plus, I’m a guy that genuinely loves to learn, explore, and manage technology.
The Job:
So I updated my resume and started putting in applications. I actually got called for an interview while I was on a business trip, no worries, we just scheduled an interview for when I returned.
Ultimately I ended up accepting that position and starting working in the public sector again.
Let’s see where this goes…
