Passing the PingFederate Certified Professional Exam & How I Prepared for It

May 5, 2022

When I accepted my current position to take over as lead for MFA/SSO about 9 months ago, I knew I would be managing multiple Ping Identity services in our environment. At the time, I didn’t have any experience with Ping products, but I’m always up for learning new things and applying previous knowledge to a new situation.

That’s why becoming certified in PingFederate was a goal of mine, I really wanted to validate what I was learning and doing on a day to day basis. Plus, I wanted to see what type of things I wasn’t being exposed to on the platform as each environment really only uses what they need from a specific tool.

The fact that there were no practice questions for this exam was different compared to others I have taken, so I figured I would treat my first try as a practice exam to see how they worded questions and what type of information they really tested on.

Even though it touched on areas I may not use daily, being familiar with the platform as a whole and the various options helped me answer those questions as well. I would say for this, having as much hands on experience with the platform as you can will go a long way.

I use it daily, plus I have my own lab setup outside of work where I can try things. I became very familiar with the documentation and would read up on things I wanted to know about, or didn’t use on a daily basis.

I did take the live instructor-led course, but found their on-demand course much more useful for me, you may find the opposite, luckily they have options.

Here’s a list of resources below:

  • PingFederate trial license
  • Exam details: https://www.pingidentity.com/en/support/training/cert-details/PICP-PF.html
  • Live course: https://www.pingidentity.com/en/support/training/course-details.html?id=388
  • On-demand course: https://www.pingidentity.com/en/support/training/course-details.html?id=406
  • Documentation: https://docs.pingidentity.com/bundle/pingfederate-110/page/tle1564002955874.html

Overall I’m glad to have this certification, it feels great to validate my knowledge on the platform as well as identify areas I want to dig a little deeper on.
